In this article we want to talk about such a tool as a two-handed saw. This hand tool is designed for fast sawing of large pieces of wood or solid tree trunks in any direction by two people. Of course, at present, such tools are becoming a thing of the past, primarily due to the emergence of a large number of electric or gasoline tools. Manual work is reduced to a minimum, which is why hand tools are no longer used by home craftsmen. But back to our tool.
A two-handed saw looks like a flat metal sheet about 1 - 1.5 meters long. The canvas in the upper part has an even edge, and in the lower part it is semicircular. On the semicircular edge there is a row of straight teeth along the entire length of the tool. In order to make it convenient to work with the tool, there are wooden handles at the ends of the saw. As a material for
two-handed saws use high-strength steel, and the teeth are additionally hardened.
Wooden handles are inserted into special fasteners, which are made by bending the edges of the canvas in the form of a cylinder.
Compared to a hand saw or garden saw, the efficiency of cutting wood with a two-handed saw is many times greater. With its help, you can quickly saw through a tree trunk with a diameter of up to 50 - 60 mm, beams, thick boards, etc. Previously, when there were no chainsaws and special machines for felling trees, all lumberjacks used this tool. With its help, the population sawed firewood, and also used it in the construction of houses and various structures made of wood.
For cutting relatively short wooden blanks with a two-handed saw, “goats” are used as a rule. This is a special design in order to fix a log or board at a height convenient for workers so that the log does not rotate and does not move from the cutting point. Long logs and boards are sawn directly on the ground, having previously placed a piece of a bar or board under the cut so that the canvas does not pinch at the end of the cut.
Like other types of saws, a two-handed saw requires such a preparatory element as tooth setting. Due to the wiring, which is made with a special tool, the teeth are slightly bent to the sides from the web axis. As a result, the cut with a divorced tool is wider than the thickness of the blade and the saw does not “clamp” (does not jam the saw in the cut) from the side with wood.
A two-handed saw is not used in carpentry because of the rather large width of the cut and low accuracy, but for sawing wood for firewood or for carpentry, it is quite good material.
Now it is quite easy to find a two-handed saw in a hardware store, because this tool is still in demand among those people who live in rural areas and cannot afford to buy a chainsaw, for example, but it is worth noting that modern saws have become worse. First of all, this of course concerns the blade of the tool. The teeth are often not hardened and dull quickly, and mild steel is used in the manufacture of blades. Therefore, if you need such a tool, we advise you to look for a Soviet tool in good condition from ads or among friends.
