Every person who has his own garden sooner or later faces the difficulties associated with pruning branches at high altitude. If the tree has thick branches that can withstand a leaning ladder and a person standing on it, you can get by with an ordinary garden saw. But what if the tree is tall and has a large number of thin branches. If you leave everything as it is, without pruning, the crop will decrease significantly.
However, there is a way out of this situation. You need to use a tool such as a garden pole pruner. It is with its help that, being on the ground, you can cut the branches at the very top of the tree without much difficulty and without the use of other items such as ladders, stepladders or a stool. Due to its design and performance, this garden tool has gained popularity among both professionals and ordinary citizens.
Structurally, the pole cutter consists of a long rod and a cutting part. Depending on the type and type of pole cutter, they differ significantly, but these parts are always present.
Types of high cutters
Depending on the design and type of energy source used to transfer force to the cutting element, all pole cutters are divided into several types.
1. Mechanical pole cutter.
It is often called a lopper. Trimming branches and branches in this tool is due to the muscular effort of the person who uses it. Structurally, it consists of long handles and a special cutting sector. Standing on the ground with it, you can get close to almost any hard-to-reach branch and cut it off. Of the minuses of this type of pole cutter, it is worth noting that with its help you are unlikely to be able to perform a large amount of work. Muscles still get tired quite quickly and a person needs rest. For older people, we especially do not recommend using this tool.
2. Electric and cordless pole pruner.
These pole saws are equipped with electric motors that are powered by a conventional electrical network or a special battery. In fact, these high cutters are not very common. This is dictated, firstly, by a significantly limited supply of energy (for batteries) and attachment to a current source (for electric). In the second case, it is necessary to transmit electricity through an extension cord, and often the garden is far enough away from the place where there is a socket. It is also very inconvenient to work with a tool from which the cable is pulled. It can become entangled in bushes or other trees, and can easily be tripped over and injured.
As advantages of this type of tool, it is worth noting their extremely low noise and environmental friendliness. This type of tool is suitable for people who have a small garden or front garden near the house, which does not require large amounts of pruning work.
3. Petrol pole cutter.
This type of cutter is the most common. In appearance, this species is very similar to a trimmer (motokosu), which is designed for cutting grass on lawns. The only difference is the cutting part. For grass, pieces of a durable thin plastic rod of a small section are used, and for chain branches, they look like conventional chainsaws. It is also worth noting that the handle of power cutters has a telescopic design of variable length. Two-stroke or four-stroke gasoline internal combustion engines are used as a power plant on petrol height cutters. Internal combustion engines have much more power than electric ones. They use a mixture of gasoline and oil as fuel.
In terms of price, petrol height cutters are the most expensive. It is also worth noting that they require refueling and a large amount of maintenance work. Despite this, their advantages over other types of high cutters are undeniable.
Important characteristics when choosing a pruner
If you need a pole cutter, then before you stop at one or another model, you need to know their most important parameters and characteristics. The main cited characteristics that we will describe are typical for petrol and electric pole cutters.
1. Length (height) of the pole cutter. This is a very important feature, especially if you have tall trees in your garden. The longer the pole cutter, the higher you can cut branches. However, the length also affects the mass of the tool, besides, it is more difficult to work with a long rod.
2. Internal combustion engine. Depending on the model, they can be two-stroke or four-stroke. Two-stroke models are much cheaper, but their torque and power are significantly lower. If you need to cut a large number of thick branches, it is better to choose pole pruners with four-stroke engines.
3. The presence of an anti-vibration system. Thanks to this system, vibration from the engine to the hands is significantly reduced. In this regard, the body gets tired less and work is much more comfortable.
4. The presence of an oil pump for chain lubrication. Expensive models of gasoline hoists are equipped with a special oil pump, which automatically lubricates the cutting chain. This significantly increases the service life of the pole cutter and reduces the load on the engine.
5. Ergonomic handle. In good models, the handles have special rubberized inserts that reduce hand slip.
6. The size of the cutting part. The smaller the structure of the bar on which the cutting chain is attached, the easier it will be to reach the desired branch. This is especially important in dense and dense tree crowns.
7. Tool weight. For high cutters, this indicator is important. The fact is that this tool in the process of work you must constantly hold in your hands. If the weight of the pole cutter is large, you will quickly get tired.
8. Noise parameter. If you buy a pole pruner with an electric motor, you can ignore this parameter altogether. Electric motors make almost no noise. But petrol horns have enough noise. Be sure to look at the product data sheet for the level of noise generated and, if possible, try to choose one that is quieter. As an additional protection for your hearing organs, do not forget to take special headphones from the store.
