What to choose a drill or puncherA very large number of people ask this question when deciding to purchase a hole drilling tool in their home kit. Without going into the issues of differences between different models of drills and rotary hammers, without getting hung up on brands and their cost, using our own experience and the experience of acquaintances and friends involved in the field of construction and repair.

To begin with, for people who are not very well versed in construction tools, we will give general data regarding tools such as a drill or electric drill (hand drills are now very difficult to find) and a hammer drill.

Indeed, despite the fact that they are similar in appearance, these are different tools and the internal arrangement of the mechanical and electrical parts works differently for them.

So: A drill is a fairly small tool for drilling holes with a small diameter drill in a wide variety of materials - from metal to plastic, wood, brick and concrete. In stone materials, of course, you can only drill holes if the drill is equipped with a hammer drilling function, although most modern models are equipped with this function.

Also, if you insert a drill bit together into a drill, you can use it to tighten screws and self-tapping screws, but this must be done very carefully, since there is a possibility of burning the engine when blocking the rotation of the fastener. A modern average drill weighs 2 - 4 kg and a power cord of about 2 meters. Drills can be equipped with keyless chucks or chucks with a special key. The power of the drill can be from 350W to 2000W. As consumables in drills, various types of drills with a round or hexagonal shank are used.

A perforator is a similar but fundamentally different tool. First of all, it is distinguished by its large size and power, as well as its purpose. Its scope is more specialized.

The fact is that the puncher is primarily intended for dismantling work (chipping concrete, brick, plaster, tiles), chasing and drilling holes in stone materials. To do this, there is an impact mode in the punch function. This is when the cartridge does not rotate, but simply moves forward and backward for a short distance. An inserted lance or spatula, hitting the material, destroys it due to a large number of blows - as in a jackhammer. In addition, in modern rotary hammers, the function of drilling with impact and just drilling is implemented.

If we replace the standard cartridge in the puncher with a cartridge for a conventional drill, we will get an ordinary, powerful drill. Although this is not the main function of the puncher. In terms of power, hammer drills are significantly superior to drills, since crushing concrete or even drilling it is much more difficult than making a hole in wood or thin metal. As consumables in perforators, special drills are used, which are not clamped in the cartridge, but are simply inserted through special grooves (snap into place). It is impossible to use these drills in a conventional drill, as it warps in the drill chuck.

If we summarize this information, we can conclude that ideally both tools are needed, but if you are not professionally involved in construction and repair, sometimes doing some kind of repair work around the house, we recommend a medium-sized drill and that's it. If necessary, you can drill several holes in the wall with its help without using a puncher.

It is also worth noting that you will increasingly have to hold this tool in your hands, and here the weight of the tool plays a big role. When working with a heavy tool, the hands quickly get tired, which lengthens the repair time. In addition, the drill is more in demand in home repairs. The most optimal will be a drill with a power of 600-800 watts.

The brand and brand does not matter much, since the load on the tool will be small. It all depends on your wallet. The only thing is that it must have impact drilling - believe me, you will definitely need it in life.

Well, for those who rarely do repair work, the ideal option would be a cordless screwdriver with hammer drilling function. In general, with small amounts of work, this is a universal tool that will also replace screwdrivers. When assembling furniture, this will greatly speed up the work and you will immediately appreciate it. In addition, the battery provides independence from sockets and the mains, which allows it to be used where it is difficult to reach the electric line, for example, to the roof.
